Don’t Skip the Middle Years

The middle years get a bad reputation.

The eye rolls. The sass. The attitude. The tongues out, the peace signs, the occasional middle finger when they think no one’s looking.

But here’s the thing — that’s the magic of it.

This stage of life sits right in the messy, beautiful middle between childhood and adulthood. Kids are figuring out who they are, pushing boundaries, testing personalities, and learning how they want to show up in the world. It’s awkward and hilarious and full of big feelings — and it absolutely deserves to be documented.

The mistake people often make is trying to tame it.

Trying to smooth it out.
Trying to make them smile sweetly.
Trying to dress them in clothes they hate or pose them in ways that don’t feel like them.

But the real magic happens when you stop fighting it.

Let them roll their eyes. Let them be sarcastic. Let them stick their tongue out, strike a ridiculous pose, or show you exactly who they are that day. Give them a little creative control and watch what happens.

When kids in this stage feel seen instead of corrected, the energy shifts. The photos become playful, real, and full of personality.

The middle years aren’t something to survive.

They’re something to celebrate.
